Reeves promises budget with ‘real ambition’ and defends cuts to key projects

Rachel Reeves conference speech 2024

Chancellor tells Labour conference there will be no return to austerity despite funding pressures

The Labour government’s first budget will be a plan with “real ambition”, Rachel Reeves has insisted as the party seeks to counter criticisms of being too gloomy about the state of Britain’s economy.

In her keynote speech at Labour’s conference in Liverpool, the chancellor said she will not “let tough decisions dim our ambition for Britain” in the autumn budget, which will take place on 30 October.
