Building the Future Commission: Planning to solve the housing crisis

BTF roofs

Last week the Building the Future commission published its final report. In this chapter, Joey Gardiner considers how we might change a dysfunctional system and hit the target of building 300,000 new homes a year

In the housing and planning stream, the Building the Future Commission has delivered an in-depth review of the English planning system, and led the wider public policy debate such as by floating the idea of a planning super-squad – months before Michael Gove announced the very same thing. These efforts have left the commission in a good place to look back and consider what will be the final housing and planning recommendations to come out of the work.

The conclusions come as the residential development industry sits at a low point, pondering an uncertain future. Mainstream housebuilders are contemplating major reductions in output in 2024 following the mortgage market challenges since the Truss-Kwarteng mini-Budget, with one former top 30 firm, Stewart Milne Group, already throwing in the towel this year.
